    Avian tuberculosis in a Lady Amherst’s pheasant Chrysolophus amherstiae

    We report a case of a Lady Amherst’s pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae) with diffuse granulomatous lesions in liver, spleen and intestine. Using histopathological and molecular diagnosis we detected Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium, etiological agent of avian tuberculosis. Further studies are needed to understand the role of wild birds in the persistence and transmission of thispathogen

    Engineering design in food-packaging industry: the case study of a tuna canning machine

    Abstract Food packaging industry requires machines able to perform different tasks and carry out several functions. Machine modularization allows to feed customer's needs creating a set of equipment with different features and technology. Module derivation is particularly important at the conceptual phase where main decisions are taken and where the degree of freedom are higher, avoiding subsequent costly modification. This study aims at investigating the adoption of engineering design process for the development of a tuna canning machine, deriving main modules for a definition of a product platform. The possibility to have a modular framework in this type of products allows to satisfy constraints coming from different markets and applications (i.e., product quality, adaptability, upgradability, assemblability, compliance with standards where the machine is installed, etc.). Modules were derived based on state-of-art approaches used for product development (i.e., functional analysis, module derivation and morphological matrix) and two examples (i.e., Cutter and Compactor & Shaper modules) were detailed to explain the developed design solutions. Results highlight how different design options can be adopted to overcome several issues (i.e., assemblability, upgradability) and fulfill requirements of different markets (i.e., product quality and aesthetic)

    A case of acute aortic dissection type b associated with cushing's syndrome

    We report a case of a 63-year-old man, with a previous history of hypertension and glucose intolerance associated troncular obesity that was emergently admitted to our Institution for evaluation of a severe, constant posterior chest pain which radiated anteriorly and dyspnoea with a suspected diagnosis of acute aortic dissection. A CT scan of thorax and abdomen demonstrated a dissection starting just below left succlavian artery and extending downward to the left renal artery, involving the celiac tripod and superior mesenteric artery. The dissection was classified as Stanford B, De Bakey III. Moreover, CT scan of abdomen revealed incidentally a left adrenal tumor of 25 mm of diameter. An emergent prosthetic graft was placed just below the origin of the left succlavian artery up-to the diaphragmatic hiatus. Furthermore, a diagnostic evaluation of the mass revealed an increase of cortisol production, and a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was done and the patient underwent an adrenalectomy via laparotomic approach.     Towards Seismic Design of Nonstructural Elements: Italian Code-Compliant Acceleration Floor Response Spectra

    Seismic risk reduction of a building system, meant as primary building structure and nonstructural elements (NSEs) as a whole, must rely upon an adequate design of each of these two items. As far as NSEs are concerned, adequate seismic design means understanding of some basic principles and concepts that involve different actors, such as designers, manufacturers, installers, and directors of works. The current Italian Building Code, referred to as NTC18 hereinafter, defines each set of tasks and responsibilities in a sufficiently detailed manner, rendering now evident that achieving the desired performance level stems from a jointed contribution of all actors involved. Bearing in mind that seismic design is nothing else than proportioning properly seismic demand, in terms of acceleration and/or displacement, and the corresponding capacity, this paper gives a synthetic and informative overview on how to evaluate these two parameters. To shed some light on this, the concept of acceleration floor response spectrum (AFRS) is firstly brought in, along with basics of building structure-NSEs interaction, and is then deepened by means of calculation methods. Both the most rigorous method based on nonlinear dynamic simulations and the simplified analytical formulations provided by the NTC18 are briefly discussed and reviewed, trying to make them clearer even to readers with no structural/earthquake engineering background because, as a matter of fact, NSEs are often selected by architects and/or mechanical or electrical engineers. Lastly, a simple case study, representative of a European code-compliant five-storey masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frame building, is presented to examine differences between numerical and analytical AFRS and to quantify accuracy of different NTC18 procedures

    C3 glomerulopathies: dense deposit disease and C3 glomerulonephritis

    Dense deposit disease (DDD) and C3 glomerulonephritis (C3GN) are types of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis classified as C3 glomerulopathies. These conditions are characterized by an increased number of intraglomerular cells and diffuse thickening of the glomerular capillary walls, along with the deposition of C3 and minimal or absent immunoglobulin deposits. The underlying cause of both DDD and C3Gn is an abnormal activation of the alternative complement pathway, which can result from acquired or genetic alteration. In acquired forms of DDD and C3GN, the dysregulation of the alternative pathway is commonly induced by the presence of C3 nephritic factors (C3NeFs), which are autoantibodies that stabilize C3 convertase. Both DDD and C3GN can affect individuals of any age, but DDD is primarily diagnosed in children, whereas C3GN tends to be diagnosed at a significantly higher age. The presenting features of these diseases are variable and may include proteinuria, hematuria, hypertension, or kidney failure. A common finding in these diseases is low serum C3 levels with normal serum C4 levels. Chronic deterioration of renal function is commonly observed in DDD and C3GN, often leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), especially in DDD. Kidney transplantation outcomes in patients with these conditions are characterized by histological recurrence, which may contribute to higher rates of allograft failure

    Effect of different protective agents on enamel erosion : an in vitro investigation

    The purpose of this in vitrostudy was to compare the effect of different protective agents on enamel erosion by measuring mean percentage weight loss. Extracted teeth were sectioned into uniform slabs and enamel specimens were randomly distributed to different groups. Initial weight of all enamel specimens was registered. The protective agents used in this study were Tooth Mousse, MI Paste Plus, Remin Pro and Remin Pro Forte. A control group was treated just with tap water. All the specimens were immersed in Coca-Cola for a total of 8 min at room temperature, dried and weighed. Enamel dissolution caused by acidic soft drink was analyzed: specimens were weighed after each immersion period and mean percent weight loss was calculated. Weight loss data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (One-way ANOVA) followed by Bonferroni?s post hoc tests. All the groups showed a statistically significant loss of weight (p<0.01) during the testing periods, increased after 8 days (~55%) and 12 days (~70%) of exposure. Specimens treated with protective agents showed significantly lower % of weight loss especially with Remin Pro or Remin Pro Forte. Soft drinks can cause enamel erosion, but protective agents tested may enhance enamel resistance against erosion

    Rational Design of Allosteric and Selective Inhibitors of the Molecular Chaperone TRAP1

    Summary: TRAP1 is the mitochondrial paralog of the heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) chaperone family. Its activity as an energy metabolism regulator has important implications in cancer, neurodegeneration, and ischemia. Selective inhibitors of TRAP1 could inform on its mechanisms of action and set the stage for targeted drug development, but their identification was hampered by the similarity among active sites in HSP90 homologs. We use a dynamics-based approach to identify a TRAP1 allosteric pocket distal to its active site that can host drug-like molecules, and we select small molecules with optimal stereochemical features to target the pocket. These leads inhibit TRAP1, but not HSP90, ATPase activity and revert TRAP1-dependent downregulation of succinate dehydrogenase activity in cancer cells and in zebrafish larvae. TRAP1 inhibitors are not toxic per se, but they abolish tumorigenic growth of neoplastic cells. Our results indicate that exploiting conformational dynamics can expand the chemical space of chaperone antagonists to TRAP1-specific inhibitors with wide therapeutic opportunities. : The molecular chaperone TRAP1 regulates energy metabolism, and its activity is relevant in cancer and degenerative diseases. Here, Sanchez-Martin et al. identify highly selective allosteric inhibitors of TRAP1. These compounds revert biochemical and pro-neoplastic effects of TRAP1 and could both enlighten its mode of action and disclose novel therapeutic strategies.     Isolation of serovars of Salmonella enterica from feces of domestic and wild animals in captivity

    Se recolectaron muestras de materia fecal correspondientes a 27 especies de animales en cautiverio pertenecientes al JardĂ­n ZoolĂłgico de Mendoza (Argentina), con el fin de encontrar portadores asintomĂĄticos de Salmonella. Las muestras de materia fecal obtenidas con hisopos se sembraron en caldo tetrationato base de MĂŒllerKauffmann y se incubaron a 43 ÂșC en baño MarĂ­a durante 24 h. AlĂ­cuotas de este medio se sembraron en agar xilosalisinadesoxicolato y, finalmente, las colonias desarrolladas se identificaron utilizando pruebas bioquĂ­micas convencionales. Como resultado, se aislĂł Salmonella serovar Meleagridis a partir de muestras de un oso polar y Salmonella serovar Give a partir de las de un oso pardo y un mono carayĂĄ. Ambas serovariedades estĂĄn asociadas con casos de salmonelosis en humanos.Fecal samples corresponding to 27 species of animals in captivity in the Mendoza Zoo (Argentina) were collected, in order to find asymptomatic carriers of Salmonella. The fecal samples obtained with swabs were seeded in MĂŒllerKauffmann base tetrathionate and incubated at 43 °C in a water bath for 24 h. Then, aliquots of this medium were seeded on xyloselysinedeoxycholate agar and, finally, formed colonies were identified using conventional biochemical tests. As a result, Salmonella serovar Meleagridis was isolated from a polar bear and Salmonella serovar Give from a brown bear and a carayĂĄ monkey samples.     Correlation energy and spin polarization in the 2D electron gas

    The ground state energy of the two--dimensional uniform electron gas has been calculated with fixed--node diffusion Monte Carlo, including backflow correlations, for a wide range of electron densities as a function of spin polarization. We give a simple analytic representation of the correlation energy which fits the density and polarization dependence of the simulation data and includes several known high- and low-density limits. This parametrization provides a reliable local spin density energy functional for two-dimensional systems and an estimate for the spin susceptibility. Within the proposed model for the correlation energy, a weakly first--order polarization transition occurs shortly before Wigner crystallization as the density is lowered.Comment: Minor typos corrected, see erratum: Phys.
